When to scan:
Where to put the probe:
RUQ
Start at level of xiphoid, mid axillary line, parallel to floor. Then sweep or aim posterior towards bed as needed. Slide transducer up to diaphragm and down to caudal edge of liver.
LUQ
Spleen/kidney slightly more caudad and posterior than liver/kidney but similar movements to RUQ
Pelvis
Transverse then sweep into pelvis over the pubic symphysis
Subcostal
Start low in abdomen, parallel to floor and slowly move towards head, sweep through the heart
RUQ
